Next-Generation Personal Authentication Course (Sponsored by Mitsubishi UFJ NICOS)

Objective
Electronic commerce transactions, which can take place regardless of time and place, continue to expand due to the recent dissemination of Internet technology. As a result, there is a rapidly growing need to develop personal authentication technology that ensures safe and assured electronic payments on the Internet. This corporately sponsored course seeks to develop personal authentication technology that proves truly useful for various social infrastructures. The research will take the form of an open spiral to enable close collaboration among industry, government, and academia.

Research Details and Themes
While electronic payments on the Internet offer convenience, they also pose many problems such as unauthorized use of credit cards and other security issues. Moreover, while biometric and other types of personal authentication technology are being developed to prevent unauthorized use, various problems exist, including psychological resistance to using fingerprints for authentication, in addition to practical issues. To date, no truly useful personal authentication technology has been established. Moreover, the technology is still underdeveloped as an academic field. In this corporate-sponsored course, research will be conducted to develop personal authentication technology that is truly useful and that is suitable for practical application. In tandem, the course will support training of researchers and technicians who promise to lead this field and will seek to establish it as an academic discipline.

Expected Contributions
The course seeks to support online electronic payments technology, which has become a type of social infrastructure in Japan and abroad. The course will develop a truly useful personal authentication technology that could set an international standard. It will contribute to society through realizing electronic commerce transactions that offer safety and assurance.
