To students interested in joining us:
We are a rather new and small group, accepting students since 2015 and consisting of a
professor, an assistant, a secretary, and a few students. Our research themes encompass
AI (artificial intelligence), NLP (natural-language processing), and so on. Students with
relevant technical backgrounds and passions are welcome. Passions and learning abilities
are more important than the present knowledge and skill. If you really enjoy learning and
thinking, then your research will be fertile.
A major focus of our research is on data in several respects. First, personal data is important
because individual consumption accounts for about 60% of GDP in most countries including
Japan. Some PDS (personal data store) is necessary to accumulate and socially share each
individual user’s own data with her own will, in order to optimize secure and fair utilization
of her personal data. Second, the availability of data (of service recipients) for primary use
(actual operation of AI to provide services to the recipients) is obviously more important than
the availability of data for secondary use (big-data crunching for training AI), and moreover
the former entails the latter. Third, data must be semantically structured according to
standard ontologies so that AI should provide meaningful services, because AI’s ability to
understand meaning is far inferior to humans before the technological singularity in a far future.
We hence aim to build a smart society, in which everybody uses PDS to share her own data
both to enjoy nice B2C/C2C services and to contribute to social benefits, while producing
semantically structured data in her daily living and work. Relevant research questions
concern how to deploy this PDS in healthcare, retail, and other services, how semantically
structured documents could be easier to compose than traditional linear documents, how to
improve service values by PDS and semantically structured data, and so forth.
